World’s Largest Iceberg, A23a, Breaks Free After Decades Grounded in Antarctic Seafloor
The colossal iceberg, A23a, which has been anchored to the Antarctic seafloor since 1986, has finally broken free and is on the move, marking a significant event in the natural cycle of ice shelves. More than twice the size of London, this enormous iceberg, originating from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf, is now drifting in the Weddell Sea after decades of being grounded.
A23a, the world’s largest iceberg, had calved from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in 1986 and immediately grounded on the Antarctic’s Weddell Sea floor. With a thickness of approximately 400 meters and an area of nearly 4,000 square kilometers, it surpasses the size of Greater London, which is 1,572 square kilometers.
Scientists Ella Gilbert and Oliver Marsh from the British Antarctic Survey explained that after nearly three decades, A23a has likely experienced sufficient shrinkage, following the natural growth cycle of ice shelves. This reduction in size likely contributed to the iceberg losing its grip on the seafloor and initiating its movement.
A23a, now released, is carried by ocean currents and is expected to travel eastward. The iceberg is currently advancing at a rate of five kilometers (three miles) per day. Its trajectory will be influenced by ocean currents in the Weddell Sea.
A23a has held the title of “largest current iceberg” multiple times since the 1980s, occasionally surpassed by larger but shorter-lived icebergs. Gilbert and Marsh emphasized that while this iceberg’s movement aligns with the natural ice shelf cycle, overall, climate change is significantly impacting Antarctica, leading to substantial ice loss.
In a related note, recent reports highlight the alarming melting of glaciers in Switzerland. Over a two-year period, Swiss glaciers lost ten percent of their ice volume due to a combination of low snowfall and soaring temperatures. This level of melting is second only to the record set in 2022, emphasizing the global impact of climate change on ice formations.
