Typhoon Koinu Approaches Southern Taiwan, Disrupts Flights and Activities
Typhoon Koinu is advancing towards southern Taiwan, bringing with it heavy rains and strong winds. As a result, 70 domestic flights have been canceled, and work and school activities have been suspended in urban areas of the island’s southern regions. Koinu is projected to make landfall on Taiwan’s southeastern coast, near Taitung, on Thursday morning as a category three typhoon. It is anticipated to weaken as it traverses the island’s southern extremity and enters the Taiwan Strait. While the heaviest rainfall is predicted in mountainous and less populated areas of Pingtung county, Taitung, and Hualien on the east coast, the typhoon will also impact the major southern port city of Kaohsiung. In response, Kaohsiung and its neighboring city Tainan have announced the suspension of work and classes from 6 p.m. (GMT) on Wednesday as the weather conditions deteriorate.
