India Resumes E-visa Services for Canadians, Ending Temporary Suspension

India has reinstated e-visa services for Canadian nationals, marking a significant development following the suspension of visa services in September. The Indian Mission in Canada had initially halted visa services citing operational reasons. However, in October, India decided to partially resume visa services for four categories, including entry visa, business visa, medical visa, and conference visa. This decision followed a thorough review of the security situation, taking into account recent measures by Canada. Canada has welcomed India’s decision, considering it a positive sign and expressing the view that the suspension “should never have happened in the first place.” The initial suspension occurred against the backdrop of a diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, triggered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of the involvement of “agents of the Indian government” in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India rejected these allegations as “absurd and motivated,” leading to the expulsion of a Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat response.
