Dubai has unveiled the Dubai Reef project, described as one of the world’s largest marine reef developments, in line with the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council. The project, led by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) in collaboration with partners, aims to enhance fish stocks, support sustainable fishing, and contribute to food security. The Dubai Reef project also plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and boosting marine biodiversity.

1. Project Scope: The Dubai Reef project spans a vast area of 600 square kilometres in Dubai’s waters, deploying artificial reef modules of various sizes.
2. Volume and Capacity: The artificial reefs have a total volume exceeding 400,000 cubic meters, with an estimated capacity to capture over seven million tonnes of carbon annually.
3. Environmental Impact: The project contributes to coral reef habitat restoration, coastal protection, and the revival of marine biodiversity along Dubai’s coastline.
4. Founding Partners: The project involves collaboration with key entities, including the Regulatory Committee on Fishing of Living Aquatic Resources in Dubai, Dubai Chambers, Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), and Nakheel.
5. Leadership’s Commitment: Sheikh Hamdan emphasized the UAE’s commitment to environmental preservation and biodiversity, aligning with climate neutrality goals by 2050.

The launch of the Dubai Reef project coincides with the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) hosted in Dubai. The initiative underscores Dubai’s dedication to sustainability and aligns with global efforts to address climate change challenges. The project aims to establish Dubai as a leading global sustainable city, contributing to a green economy and supporting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.
