China Records Lowest Birthrate in History Despite Government Efforts

Population Decline Raises Concerns Over Economic Impact

China’s birthrate saw a significant drop of 10% in 2022, reaching its lowest level since records began in 1949, according to the National Health Commission. The country recorded just 9.56 million births last year.

This decline, coupled with a decrease in the overall china population, has raised concerns among officials about the economic implications, as the country faces challenges associated with an aging population. Despite extensive efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to encourage childbirth, factors such as high childcare and education costs, job insecurity, and gender discrimination continue to deter many young couples from having children.

The demographic downturn is largely attributed to the one-child policy enforced from 1980 to 2015, with nearly 40% of babies in 2022 being the second child of a married couple. Despite government initiatives to increase child care and offer financial incentives, the birthrate remains low.

This trend mirrors similar declines in birthrates seen in Japan and the United States, signaling broader demographic shifts.
