Weather Alert: Heavy Thunderstorms Forecasted in Northern Oman

Oman Meteorology has issued a weather alert for heavy thunderstorms in the northern regions of the Sultanate of Oman on October 26, 2023. Currently, the Hajar Mountains and surrounding areas are experiencing varying intensities of rain.

The Muscat radar indicates heavy rains in the mountains of South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, and Al Dakhiliyah Governorates. These rains are expected to extend towards the coasts of the Sea of Oman. The alert covers several governorates, including Musandam, North Al Batinah, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahira, South Al Batinah, Muscat, Al Dakhylia, North Al Sharqiya, and South Al Sharqiya. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated over the Hajar Mountains and adjacent areas, extending to the coast of the Oman Sea.

The Civil Aviation Authority advises precaution during thundershowers, urging people not to cross Wadis (Flash Floods), avoid low-lying areas, and refrain from sailing during the alert period. The statement also notes that heavy rainfall, ranging between 20 – 80 mm, may lead to flash floods in Wadis, and there’s a chance of hail. Strong downdrafts with speeds of 15 to 45 kt (28-83 km/h) are expected, along with reduced horizontal visibility due to dust storms.
