Security Alert: Ain Al-Asad Base in Iraq Successfully Defends Against Drone Attack
According to two authorities, on Wednesday, the US military successfully stopped a drone attack on its soldiers stationed at the Ain Al-Asad facility in Iraq.
However, Iran-aligned Shia paramilitary organizations are generally suspected. No group immediately after the incident claimed credit. They have issued an advisory that the escalating conflict in Gaza might turn US soldiers into “legitimate military targets.”
The assault occurred shortly after the Gaza hospital, al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, was bombed; the strike, largely attributed to Israel as part of its continuing air war, is believed to have killed 200 to 300 people. But President Biden stated on Wednesday in Tel Aviv that the US concurs with Israel’s assessment that the rocket was an errant rocket fired by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).
One Iraqi side did appear to imply responsibility for the drone strike in the passages that follow:
Ahmad “Abu Hussein” al-Hamidawi, the leader of the Kataib Hezbollah militia, issued a statement on last Wednesday stating that “our missiles, drones, and special forces are ready to direct qualitative strikes at the American enemy in its bases and disrupt its interests if it intervenes in this battle.” He also made threats to fire missiles at Israeli locations.
This has set the entire area on edge, and with hundreds of US forces remaining in Iraq and in northeast Syria, new attacks on their positions by groups with ties to Iran might break out.
A second drone assault followed:
An Iraqi security source and a Western diplomat claimed that later on Wednesday, another drone attempt aimed at the al-Harir air base, which houses American personnel in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, was also thwarted.
Al-Harir was attacked by a little-known organization known as Tashkil al-Waritheen, or the Inheritor. In a declaration that foreshadows a larger regional rebellion directed against the US and Israel, the Iranian embassy in Damascus tweeted out the phrase “Time is up” on Tuesday. In fact, this has already started to happen in Jordan and Lebanon, notably.Syria and Iraq, however, may be the scene of major clashes that might soon break out. These bases most likely operate on high alert for the Pentagon. The Assad regime in Syria has long looked for tactics to compel the withdrawal of US forces. Especially in light of Washington’s support for the Syrian Kurds, Turkey also wants to see US bases removed. In-depth reporting anxiously awaiting this news
