Mexican artist unveils interactive works and custom furniture at Christie’s Dubai

Sami Hayek Launches ‘Frequency’ Art Exhibit in Dubai
The first exhibition of the well-known Mexican artist Sami Hayek’s “Frequency” at Christie’s in Dubai is on display through November 14. The multidisciplinary artist is showcasing his work in the UAE for the first time. Among the more than 20 artworks on display is the “Dubai Credenza,” a custom piece made especially for the occasion.
Hayek, who was influenced by the speedy and vibrant hummingbird, compared Dubai to the bird, pointing out its rapid growth, energy, and diversity.
Just as the hummingbird’s wings beat at an extraordinary frequency, Hayek sees Dubai as a place where change and growth happen rapidly. The artist likened the region to the hummingbird, which boasts 360 different species, symbolizing the rich variety found in Dubai’s culture and landscape.
One of the exhibition’s highlights, the “Dubai Credenza,” is a modular furniture piece created from anodized aluminum, solid walnut interiors, volcanic rock feet, and glass beads, handcrafted by artisans from a small Mexican community. The credenza is not only a functional object but also an artistic expression, reflecting Hayek’s belief in the power of space and intention.
He asserts that objects can absorb and emanate intention, influencing the way people think, feel, and behave in their environment.
The exhibition also includes a series of interactive artworks designed for viewers to touch and engage with, such as the “Mini Wing” side tables. With their 360-degree spinning top and hidden storage, these tables encourage guests to actively engage with the artwork. With these works, Hayek hopes to inspire and provoke introspection in people who engage with them.
Another interactive piece, the “Collector’s Table,” was made in partnership with Daniela Villegas, Hayek’s wife, a fine jewelry designer who is passionate about beetle collecting. The distinction between art and usefulness is further blurred by the glass cover of this bespoke table, which enables the owner to showcase their collection inside the artwork itself.
Hollywood actress Salma Hayek’s brother, Sami Hayek, sees art as a potent means of introspection and emotional connection. In order to create an environment where viewers may interact with his works on an emotional and intellectual level, he hopes that they will elicit a significant reaction from those who view them.
