When Dubai experienced heavy rainfall, some residents decided to take a unique and positive approach to the situation by turning waterlogged streets into opportunities for water activities. Videos circulated on social media capturing the spontaneous and joyful moments as people embraced the unexpected “waterfront” in their neighborhoods.
One noteworthy video was shared by Dr. Dalia Hisham Kokash, who was on her way to work when she noticed her neighbor in Arabian Ranches 2 making the best of the situation. As Al Deem Street became flooded, the neighbor decided to kayak through the temporary waterway, providing a moment of levity in the midst of the rain-induced challenges.
In a display of resilience and a positive outlook, Dr. Dalia shared her admiration for her neighbor’s ability to turn an inconvenience into an opportunity for joy. “That guy actually made my day. Since I’m a doctor, there is nothing that can stop me from going to work—not even the rain nor the flood. And that guy, my neighbor, he made the real definition of ‘don’t-let-anything-stop-you-from-chasing-your-happiness,'” she remarked.
Another Dubai resident, Mustafa Rafic Dafer, echoed this sentiment by sharing a video of himself happily kayaking on the waterlogged streets. His motto of “Positive mind. Positive vibes. Positive life. Do what you do. Enjoy life, be crazy, be yourself” seemed to encapsulate the spirit of making the best out of a challenging situation.
Anja Taljaard shared a video featuring two men paddleboarding against the iconic backdrop of the Burj Al Arab. The lighthearted caption, “Just a normal day in Dubai,” reflected the residents’ ability to find joy and entertainment even in unconventional circumstances.
These videos quickly went viral, showcasing the creativity, resilience, and sense of community among Dubai residents when faced with unexpected weather conditions. The spontaneous water activities served as a reminder of the city’s ability to adapt and find moments of joy, even in the midst of challenges.
