Oman Urges Tobacco Companies to Implement Plain Packaging
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) in Oman has issued a directive urging companies involved in the production and supply of tobacco products to adopt plain packaging for all such items available in the market.
In compliance with Ministerial Decision No. 2023/67, the ministry emphasized the implementation of Omani Standard OS1655, which mandates the use of plain packaging for tobacco products. This directive is set to become mandatory starting from April 4, 2024.
The move underscores the government’s commitment to promoting public health by discouraging the appeal of tobacco products through standardized packaging. Plain packaging is recognized as an effective measure in reducing the attractiveness of tobacco products and discouraging consumption, ultimately contributing to improved public health outcomes.
The ministry further encourages local compliance firms to work in tandem with tobacco companies to ensure the seamless adoption of plain packaging across the Sultanate of Oman. This initiative aligns with global efforts to curb tobacco use and protect public health.
