Oman Affirms Support for Palestinian Right to Self-Determination at UN General Assembly
The Sultanate of Oman has asserted its unwavering support for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, emphasizing the need for peaceful dispute resolution and the avoidance of force. Second Secretary Mohammed bin Ali Al Shehhi, a member of Oman’s delegation to the United Nations, highlighted the Sultanate’s commitment to upholding international norms and laws, and its dedication to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Oman reaffirmed its backing for the International Court of Justice’s role in upholding international law and the established principles of the United Nations Charter. The Sultanate also endorsed the United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 247/77, which called for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding Israel’s ongoing violation of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
Furthermore, Oman raised questions regarding the prolonged occupation, settlement, and annexation of Palestinian territories by Israel since 1967. The impact of these policies on the legal implications for all nations and the United Nations as a whole was a focal point of Oman’s submission. The Sultanate submitted a formal written statement to the International Court of Justice, aligning with its steadfast stance in support of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
