Britain’s King Charles celebrates his 75th birthday by officially launching the Coronation Food Project, aimed at addressing food poverty and reducing waste.The Coronation Food Project focuses on tackling food waste and redistributing surplus food to those in need. The King aims to bridge the gap between food waste and food need, addressing two pressing issues simultaneously.
King Charles, accompanied by Queen Camilla, will visit a surplus food distribution center and meet with major British supermarkets to explore ways the project can contribute to redistributing surplus food.As part of the birthday celebrations, the King will host a reception to honor the work of nurses and midwives, marking 75 years of the National Health Service (NHS).
King Charles has expressed longstanding concerns about the significant amount of food wasted throughout the country. He highlights the need to find practical ways to rescue surplus food and distribute it to those facing food insecurity.The project addresses the issue of food insecurity in the UK, with an estimated 14 million people facing food insecurity. Rising living costs have contributed to increased food poverty, leading to a 38% rise in first-time food bank users in the year to March 2023.
The Coronation Food Project aims to deliver 200 million meals to individuals experiencing food insecurity in the UK. By redistributing surplus food, the project seeks to make a meaningful impact on both food waste and food poverty.King Charles has a longstanding connection with The Big Issue magazine, which supports individuals experiencing homelessness. He previously opened an office for the magazine in the 1990s.The Prince of Wales, William, King Charles’s son, engaged with The Big Issue by selling it undercover last year and appearing on the cover for his 40th birthday.
King Charles’s initiative reflects a commitment to addressing social issues, leveraging his influence to contribute to practical solutions for food waste and food poverty in the UK.
