India Appeals Against Death Sentences for Eight Former Naval Officers in Qatar
Eight former Indian naval officers, employed by the private company Al Dahra in Qatar, have been sentenced to death on unspecified charges. The officers were arrested in August last year, and the exact nature of the charges against them remains undisclosed. While India has filed an appeal against the verdict, the families of the individuals have confirmed their identities and background in the Indian Navy. The Indian government expressed deep shock over the verdict and assured that it would engage with Qatari authorities on the matter. The tension over this case could have implications for diplomatic relations between India and Qatar. In December, India’s foreign minister, S Jaishankar, had mentioned that the government was in constant touch with Qatar regarding this “very sensitive case.” The reasons behind the arrests and the specific charges are yet to be officially confirmed by either government. This case underscores the challenges faced by expatriate workers, particularly those from India, in Gulf countries, where millions of Indians are employed in various sectors, contributing significantly to the region’s economy.
