India and Italy sign crucial Defence Cooperation Agreement during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s official visit to Rome.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, currently on an official visit to Italy, engaged in a productive meeting with his Italian counterpart, Guido Crosetto, in Rome. The two ministers signed an agreement on Defence cooperation between India and Italy, emphasizing areas such as training, information sharing, and maritime security.

In a social media update, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed, “Had a warm and productive meeting with the Italian Defence Minister Mr Guido Crosetto in Rome. We discussed a host of issues pertaining to defence cooperation which included training, information sharing and maritime security.”

He further mentioned that both countries are eager to strengthen their defence partnership. Additionally, an Agreement on Defence Cooperation was formalized during this meeting.

The relationship between India and Italy was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in March 2023 during the visit of the Italian Prime Minister to India. Both nations have a warm and cooperative relationship, marked by regular exchanges at political and official levels.

In the second leg of his two-nation visit, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to conduct the 5th Annual Defence Dialogue with his French counterpart, Minister of Armed Forces Sebastian Lecornu in Paris. India and France recently celebrated 25 years of their Strategic Partnership, highlighting their deep and extensive bilateral defence cooperation, including substantial industrial collaboration.

The visit to France is particularly significant as India is considering the purchase of 26 Rafale M fighters from the country for the Indian Navy. During his time in Rome and Paris, Minister Rajnath Singh will also engage with CEOs and senior representatives from the defence industry to explore potential opportunities for industrial cooperation.
