Dubai Municipality and Continental Tires Unveil Innovative Volleyball Court from Recycled Tyres
In a groundbreaking initiative toward sustainability and community engagement, Dubai Municipality has announced the construction of a special public volleyball court at Al Mankhool, crafted entirely from recycled tyres. The collaborative project with Continental Tires, set to open this December, not only adds to Dubai’s sporting infrastructure but also aligns with the principles of the circular economy.
The announcement, made during COP28, underscores the municipality’s commitment to fostering a more sustainable and liveable Dubai through innovative projects. The initiative draws inspiration from a successful pilot project in Hanover, Germany, where Continental Tires transformed used tyres into a sustainable basketball court using a similar method.
Continental Tires will repurpose the tyres into rubber paving stones, forming the foundation of the volleyball court. The meticulous process involves extracting all chemical components from the tyres, ensuring a comprehensive and environmentally responsible repurposing. This not only breathes new life into discarded tyres but also reflects a commitment to sustainable practices in construction.
Ahmed Ibrahim Al Zarouni, Director of Public Parks and Recreational Facilities Department at Dubai Municipality, expressed the significance of the partnership, stating, “Our partnership with Continental reflects how we are integrating sustainability into our work to build a cohesive society that promotes community spirit and an active lifestyle.”
José De la Fuente, managing director of Continental Tires Middle East, emphasized the global impact of such initiatives, saying, “This volleyball project stands as testament to our commitment to environmental responsibility. By transforming used tyres in such a way, we not only contribute to reducing waste but also showcase our dedication, in collaboration with Dubai Municipality, to fostering community engagement through sport.”
The innovative volleyball court represents a tangible step towards Dubai’s vision of sustainable development and a circular economy, providing the community with a unique space for recreational activities while championing the responsible repurposing of materials.
