Devastating Earthquakes Continue to Rock Western Afghanistan, Leaving Thousands in Desperation
In a tragic series of events, western Afghanistan has been struck by another powerful earthquake, further exacerbating an already dire situation. The shallow 6.3-magnitude quake, which occurred at 0336 GMT, originated 33 kilometers from Herat city, the capital of the eponymous province. This region has been grappling with a relentless series of tremors throughout the month, resulting in widespread devastation and a staggering loss of life.
A mere 20 minutes later, a 5.5-magnitude aftershock added to the anguish of the affected communities. This recent catastrophe follows a magnitude 6.3 quake on October 7, accompanied by eight formidable aftershocks. The combined impact has left entire villages in ruins, claiming over 1,000 lives and injuring hundreds more. The toll on the most vulnerable is particularly distressing, with UNICEF reporting that over 90 percent of the victims are women and children.
UNICEF’s Herat-based field officer Siddig Ibrahim emphasized the heightened risk faced by women and children, who are often at home caring for their families when disaster strikes. The damage has been catastrophic, particularly in the Zenda Jan district, where six villages have been entirely obliterated, leaving more than 12,000 people reeling from the tremors.
With thousands now living in fear of aftershocks amid the remnants of their homes, providing adequate shelter is a monumental challenge. The public health minister, Qalandar Ebad, acknowledged the harsh reality faced by those affected, particularly in light of the approaching cold weather. He expressed concern over their ability to endure prolonged stays in makeshift tents.
Compounding the crisis is Afghanistan’s pre-existing humanitarian plight, further exacerbated by the withdrawal of foreign aid in the wake of the Taliban’s return to power. The region’s vulnerability to earthquakes, exacerbated by the predominance of traditional mud and wood structures, underscores the urgent need for assistance and support.
