World Cup Qualifiers: UAE Strengthens Final Push with Quartet
Emirates gears up for decisive clashes against Iran and North Korea with fresh talent and key returns

World Cup Qualifiers: UAE Reinforces Squad for Crucial Matches
The UAE returns to its 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign after a four-month hiatus, bolstered by four recently naturalized players. The club wants to improve its chances of finishing in the top two with two important away games remaining in Group A.
Currently third in the group, the UAE faces leaders Iran in Tehran on March 20 before taking on North Korea in Riyadh five days later. The top two teams secure direct qualification, while the best third-placed team across groups enters a play-off.
New Reinforcements & Key Returns
The UAE Football Association has granted citizenship to four standout club players: Caio Lucas and Luan Pereira (Sharjah), Jonatas Santos (Al Wasl), and Alaa El-Din Zuhair (Al Wahda). They join a 27-man squad, which will be trimmed ahead of the Iran clash.
Sharjah goalkeeper Khalid Tawhid and Shabab Al Ahli striker Sultan Adel return from injury, while Abdullah Ramadan (Al Jazira) adds depth in midfield.
Attacking Boost & Defensive Reinforcement
Caio Lucas, a prolific forward with 20 goals and seven assists this season, is expected to enhance the UAE’s attack. His adaptability and finishing prowess help the squad overcome its prior goalscoring shortcomings.
Alaa El-Din Zuhair, a vital member of the Al Wahda team, fortifies the defense. He could help avoid late-game errors because of his reputation for aerial skill and tactical understanding.
Decisive Fixtures Ahead
With 10 points from six matches, the UAE trails second-placed Uzbekistan by three points but holds a similar lead over Qatar. With Uzbekistan’s head coach stepping down in January, the group dynamics may shift.
Facing group leaders Iran—who edged the UAE 1-0 in the first leg—Paulo Bento’s men will be determined to secure a crucial result and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
