UAE Women’s Team Retires All 10 Batters in Rare Strategy Move Against Qatar at T20 Asia Qualifier
In a highly unusual moment during the Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier 2025 in Bangkok, the entire UAE batting lineup, except the openers, retired out in a strategic decision during their group-stage match against Qatar.
Emirates captain Esha Oza and opener Theertha Satish put up a strong show at the Terdthai Cricket Ground. In just 16 overs, the two scored 192 runs, with Oza scoring an incredible 113 from 55 balls and Satish adding 74 off 42. With rain looming and a massive total already on the board, both retired voluntarily.
Then came a twist rarely seen in T20 cricket—all remaining ten UAE batters retired out at the start of the 17th over, most without even facing a ball. According to reports, this was a pre-planned tactic to hasten the game due to the threat of rain and ensure a full bowling innings.
Despite the unorthodox conclusion to their innings, UAE’s bowlers maintained full control. Qatar’s lineup collapsed for just 29 runs in 11.1 overs, with only Rizpha Emmanuel reaching double figures. Seven Qatari players were dismissed for ducks, with Michelle Botha taking 3 for 11.
The UAE won by a stunning 163 runs, but their decision to retire ten players – a rare and technically legal tactic – made headlines and sparked debate around the cricketing world.
