Urgent Humanitarian Crisis Unfolding in Earthquake-Affected Afghanistan
In the wake of devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan’s Herat province, over 154,000 individuals are grappling with dire conditions in crowded tent camps. The tremors, which struck in early October, resulted in significant damage to health care facilities, making it even more challenging to provide critical medical care.
Pregnant women, who lost family members in the disaster, are particularly vulnerable. Reports indicate that more than 90% of earthquake victims were women and children. With winter approaching, international aid organizations like UNICEF are urgently appealing for additional funding to support the affected population, especially the 96,000 children impacted by the disaster.
While the Taliban has established a commission to distribute aid, concerns remain about their capacity to manage the crisis effectively. Additionally, economic challenges, including sanctions and exclusion from international financial systems, are hampering direct monetary assistance to those in need.
The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to provide relief to earthquake-affected communities in Afghanistan.
