New measures to reduce waste and promote sustainability in Dubai

Dubai Bans Single-Use Plastics: Major Steps Towards Sustainability Starting January 2025

Dubai has formally banned single-use plastics from January 1, 2025, a major step in the emirate’s environmental efforts. As a result of this restriction, many plastic items that are frequently used in establishments such as restaurants, delivery services and companies will no longer be used. The project aims to reduce plastic waste, encourage environmentally friendly behaviors among businesses and residents, and promote a culture of recycling and reuse.

Dubai bans single-use plastics
Dubai Municipality, which is responsible for implementing a program to reduce single-use plastics, has identified a number of items that are currently banned.
These include:

Single-use Styrofoam cups
Plastic cotton swabs
Plastic table covers
Plastic straws
Styrofoam food containers
Plastic stirrers

Existing Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags
Dubai’s environmental agenda extends beyond single-use plastics. In June 2024, a city-wide ban on single-use plastic bags will take effect, following a resolution by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The goal is to reduce waste and end the widespread use of plastic bags by promoting recycling and sustainable practices. In line with the principles of a circular economy, the resolution urges the business sector to adopt environmentally friendly products.

Corporate and Customer Responsibility
New regulations will make it mandatory for Dubai’s retailers, restaurants and vendors to provide affordable, reusable alternatives to plastic products. The scheme aims to reduce reliance on plastic while encouraging consumers to use eco-friendly alternatives, including reusable containers, bags and cutlery.

Phasing Out Single-Use Plastics in Stages
Over the coming years, Dubai is implementing a phase-out of single-use plastics gradually:

January 2024: To incentivize consumers to use fewer single-use plastic bags, a 25-fil tax was implemented.
June 2024: Single-use plastic bags will be outlawed completely.
January 2025: More plastic products will be prohibited, such as straws, stirrers, and Styrofoam containers.
January 2026: Single-use plastic food containers, cutlery, lids, and cups will also be prohibited.
Businesses and consumers are given time to adapt to the new rules and embrace sustainable alternatives thanks to this methodical approach.

Dubai is a pioneer in the region in protecting the environment, with a progressive phase-out of single-use plastics and a clear push for sustainable practices. The city aims to drastically reduce its environmental impact while fostering a circular economy that benefits citizens and businesses by eliminating dangerous plastic products and supporting environmentally friendly alternatives.
