UAE receives first additional Airbus A330 tanker aircraft
New Airbus A330 MRTT enhances UAE's air-to-air refueling and transport capabilities, supporting defense modernization

UAE Expands Fleet with Airbus A330 MRTT for Advanced Refueling and Strategic Transport
Derived from the A330-200 civil model, the Airbus A330 MRDT is designed for in-flight refueling and strategic transport missions. With a fuel capacity of up to 111 tonnes, the MRTT exceeds the capabilities of conventional tankers.
It has an advanced aerial refueling boom system (ARBS) that allows fuel delivery at 3,600 kg/min, supporting a wide range of receiver aircraft including the F-16, F-35A and other MRTT models.
Equipped with Cobham 905E underwing pods, the MRTT also efficiently refuels reconnaissance-equipped aircraft such as the Eurofighter, Tornado and F/A-18. In addition to refueling, the A330 MRTT can carry 300 passengers or 45 tonnes of cargo and can be configured for medical evacuation with room for up to 130 stretchers.
The A330 MRTT is at the forefront of automated air-to-air refueling (A3R), with certification for this capability expected in 2024 following a successful campaign by the Singapore Air Force. This technology reduces operator workload while enhancing fuel transfer efficiency. The MRTT can also be equipped with missile detection and infrared countermeasures, ensuring its effective operation in hostile environments. Its versatility and advanced features make it an essential asset for modern air forces.
During the Dubai Air Show in November 2021, the UAE confirmed the purchase of two additional A330 MRTTs, bringing its fleet to five units. This expansion underscores the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its aviation fuel and strategic transport capabilities. The contract also includes upgrades to three existing MRTTs, bringing them up to the latest technological standards.
The A330 MRTT is highly versatile, capable of performing both refueling and troop and cargo transport operations. Since entering service with the UAE Air Force and Air Defense in 2013, the MRTT has reliably met the country’s military needs.
The arrival of this new aircraft is a key step in the UAE’s defense strategy, aimed at modernizing and expanding its aerial capabilities. The second MRTT is expected in the coming months, completing the 2021 order, with upgrades to the existing fleet already in progress to align with the latest technology standards.
The UAE Air Force includes fighter jets such as the F-16E/F Desert Falcon and Mirage 2000-9, and transport aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster III and C-130 Hercules. In addition, the fleet includes helicopters and drones, reflecting the UAE’s intention to diversify and develop its capabilities. In December 2021, the UAE confirmed the purchase of 80 Rafale F4 fighter jets from France, further upgrading its fleet with advanced technology.
The relationship between the UAE, Airbus and France is strategic and multifaceted. UAE-French cooperation has been strengthened through the Rafale F4 deal and extended to joint space programs, with the acquisition of military aircraft including A330 MRTTs for in-flight refueling. Airbus and the UAE are collaborating on satellite projects such as FalconEye, further strengthening partnerships in key sectors.
