UAE, Kazakhstan Ink Deal to Boost Renewable Energy Growth
Masdar and Samruk-Kazyna partner on 24/7 green power and major wind project

UAE and Kazakhstan Forge Strategic Pact to Boost Renewable Energy Infrastructure
The United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan have signed a comprehensive renewable energy agreement with the goal of promoting sustainable development and energy security, marking a major step toward a greener global energy environment. The agreement, sealed in the presence of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, marks a deepening of bilateral cooperation in the field of clean energy.
The centrepiece of the pact is a groundbreaking collaboration between Masdar, the UAE’s leading renewable energy company, and Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund, Samruk-Kazyna. The initiative includes the development of a cutting-edge, around-the-clock renewable energy project capable of producing up to 500 megawatts (MW) of baseload power. It will be supported by an integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) with a total capacity of up to 2 gigawatts (GW), enabling uninterrupted power supply regardless of weather or daylight conditions.
Formalized during a high-level ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Astana, the agreement was signed by Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, and Nurlan Zhakupov, CEO of Samruk-Kazyna. The event also saw the official ratification of an Intergovernmental Agreement that clears the path for Masdar’s ambitious 1GW wind power project in Kazakhstan. This wind farm—one of Central Asia’s largest to date—will also feature a 600 MWh battery system to enhance stability and grid performance.
Dr. Al Jaber emphasized that the agreement builds upon an already strong partnership between the UAE and Kazakhstan. “This strategic collaboration enables Kazakhstan to not only meet its current and future energy demands but also unlocks new economic opportunities and green jobs,” he said.
Nurlan Zhakupov echoed the significance of the alliance, noting that it directly supports Kazakhstan’s climate strategy, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and increase renewable energy’s share in the national mix to 15% by 2030 and 50% by 2050.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi added that this initiative further solidifies Masdar’s commitment to Kazakhstan as a key partner in its broader Central Asian strategy. “Together with Samruk-Kazyna, we are advancing regional energy transformation, strengthening energy independence, and reinforcing our global leadership in climate innovation,” he said.
The deal is in line with Mustar’s broader plan to increase global renewable energy capacity to 100GW by 2030. With significant projects currently underway in Central Asia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, the business is gradually building a global network of sustainable energy solutions.
Mustar made headlines during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week by announcing the world’s first gigascale, 24-hour solar power and battery storage project. With a 5.2 GW solar PV plant and 19 GWh battery storage facility, the project is expected to generate 1 GW of electricity continuously, representing a significant improvement in energy sustainability and reliability.
As global energy demand increases and climate goals become more urgent, the UAE-Kazakhstan partnership represents a model of cross-border cooperation and forward-thinking investment in renewable infrastructure. It underscores a shared vision for a future powered by clean, secure and resilient energy systems.
