UAE Grants Taxpayers Grace Period to Update Records, Waives Penalties Paid Since January 2024

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) of the United Arab Emirates has instituted a grace period to help taxpayers who have neglected to update their tax registration records. This enables firms to comply with tax obligations without incurring fines. With effect from January 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, this grace period attempts to increase compliance and lessen the regulatory burden on companies. The program will include reimbursements for taxpayers who have already paid fines within this period.

The standards for the payment, waiver, and refund of administrative penalties are outlined in Cabinet Decision No. (105) of 2021 on Penalty Refund Procedures, which is in conformity with this decision.
Additionally, violators can now update their records without facing fines associated with failing to notify the FTA about changes in their registration information.

Updating Tax Records to Avoid Penalties

According to Cabinet Decision No. (74) of 2023, registered taxpayers must inform the FTA of any changes to their tax registration details within 20 working days, using the FTA’s designated form and procedures. This includes updates to information such as name, address, email, commercial license activities, legal structure, partnership agreements, or any modifications in the business’s nature or primary address.

FTA Director General Khalid Ali Al Bustani highlighted that this decision is part of the FTA’s commitment to helping businesses comply with UAE tax laws. The initiative provides registrants who fell behind on tax updates with an opportunity to avoid administrative penalties by utilizing the grace period.

Supporting Business Compliance and Economic Growth

Al Bustani emphasized that this Cabinet Decision is in line with the UAE’s leadership strategy to uphold economic momentum, encourage corporate compliance, and create a tax structure that can change to meet evolving demands. The FTA anticipates that this action will increase the competitiveness of the UAE, foster a compliant business environment, and accelerate national economic growth.

Awareness and Resources for Taxpayers

The FTA is aggressively promoting this grace period by providing taxpayers with comprehensive explanations of technical tax compliance issues through its Public Clarifications service, which is available on the FTA’s website here. In order to make it simpler for taxpayers to comprehend their duties and obligations, this website attempts to simplify tax ideas.
