New policy mandates phone confiscation to boost discipline, protect privacy, and enhance learning

UAE Ministry of Education Enforces Strict Mobile Phone Policy in Schools
The UAE’s Ministry of Education has mandated that all public and private schools that follow the national curriculum take stringent steps to seize and lock down any cell phones that pupils bring to class.
This step is part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to improve the learning environment, safeguard the safety and privacy of teachers and students, reduce distractions in the classroom, and prevent the negative effects of cell phone use.
. The policy seeks to enhance the general standard of student life and encourage constructive student conduct.
As per the directive, the ministry has called for the prompt confiscation of cell phones that are discovered in the possession of students on school property.
This behavior complies with the Ministry-approved Student Code of Conduct. In order to ensure that students follow school rules and use them sparingly, a first infraction will result in the phone being detained for a month, while subsequent offenses will result in the phone being retained until the end of the school year.
Respect for privacy
To protect student privacy, the order specifies that confiscated phones may not be searched or inspected for personal content, except in exceptional cases and under strict procedures to protect students’ rights.
If necessary, a special team will be called to inspect the phone. Furthermore, additional measures will be taken to safeguard the rights of those affected, including referring instances to the Child Rights Division for suitable action, if it is discovered that a student recorded a phone call without the consent of instructors or fellow students.
Knowledge and collaboration
The Ministry emphasized how crucial parental collaboration is to carrying out this goal. In order to ensure that students follow the rules, schools must effectively collaborate with families by informing and educating parents about the new procedures.
This collaboration is important in strengthening discipline and improving the learning environment.
Monitoring and follow-up
To ensure compliance with the directive, the Ministry has directed schools to document all cases of mobile phone confiscation using official forms approved by the Ministry.
After the phone is seized, parents should be informed and asked to sign a form to guarantee responsibility and openness. Additionally, schools are urged to hold awareness campaigns on the detrimental effects that cell phone use has on students’ focus and academic achievement.
The Ministry is dedicated to creating a distraction-free, ideal learning environment so that children can flourish in a calm, orderly setting.
The program is a component of the ministry’s continuous endeavors to guarantee that students embrace proper academic conduct and emphasize the significance of discipline in the learning process. The Ministry emphasizes that this action is in the best interests of the pupils and the education community at large, and it hopes that all parents and students will follow the directive.
In order to establish a secure and productive learning environment that enhances academic performance, safeguards the privacy of both students and staff, and fosters discipline on school property, schools are encouraged to carefully follow these recommendations.
