Abu Dhabi Invites Proposals for Greenfield 400-Megawatt Battery Energy Storage Project

Abu Dhabi is setting the stage for a significant advancement in its renewable energy infrastructure with the initiation of a new greenfield battery energy storage project. The state-owned Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) has officially requested proposals from 27 pre-qualified companies and consortiums for the development of a 400-megawatt battery energy storage system. This ambitious project is a crucial component of Abu Dhabi’s strategy to enhance its energy transition and support its commitment to clean energy sources.

Request for Proposals Process

Ewec has issued a formal request for proposals (RFPs) to 27 qualified bidders, who have successfully navigated the initial qualification process. This follows an earlier expression of interest (EOI) phase conducted in April 2024, during which 93 companies and consortiums expressed their intent. The details regarding the financial valuation of the project have not been disclosed at this stage.

Project Details and Strategic Goals

The planned battery energy storage system will boast a storage capacity of up to 800 megawatt-hours. This substantial capacity is expected to play a pivotal role in accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources, thereby supporting Abu Dhabi’s broader environmental and sustainability goals. The project aims to significantly lower the carbon dioxide intensity associated with power supply. Specifically, it seeks to reduce CO2 emissions from 330 kilograms per megawatt hour (kg/MWh) in 2019 to an estimated 190 kg/MWh by 2030. This reduction aligns with Abu Dhabi’s vision for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

Technological and Operational Benefits

Othman Al Ali, CEO of Ewec, emphasized the importance of utility-scale battery energy storage technology in facilitating the integration of renewable solar energy into the grid. This technology will enable more efficient management of peak demand and overall system operations. The project will follow the independent power producer (IPP) model, which involves the comprehensive development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance, and ownership of the battery storage system and its associated infrastructure.

Project Implementation and Timeline

The RFP submission deadline is set for the final quarter of this year. Upon selection, the chosen developers will be tasked with advancing this critical project, which is expected to contribute significantly to Abu Dhabi’s energy infrastructure. The successful implementation of this battery energy storage system will not only enhance the city’s ability to integrate renewable energy but also bolster its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable energy practices.

This initiative marks a significant step in Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to lead in the adoption of clean energy technologies and demonstrate its commitment to environmental sustainability.
