Sheikh Mohammed and Trump discuss strategic ties, humanitarian aid, and Gaza ceasefire urgency

UAE President and Trump Discuss Gaza Ceasefire, Humanitarian Aid, and Regional Peace

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and former US President Donald Trump held a phone call on Tuesday to discuss efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, as reported by the Gulf nation’s official news agency, WAM.

During the discussion, the two leaders stressed the need to strengthen the strategic partnership between the United States and the UAE, and to further enhance cooperation in all fields for shared goals. The recent visit to the United States by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor and Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi, which led to the signing of important agreements and the enhancement of diplomatic relations, was another topic of discussion.

The Middle East issue, in particular the ongoing violence in Gaza, was one of the main topics of the call. Sheikh Mohammed stressed the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of civilians in the besieged territory. He reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to the two-state solution, as the cornerstone of a just and lasting peace between Israel and Palestine.

The importance of the enduring cooperation between the United States and the UAE in advancing regional security and international peace efforts was also underlined during the discussion.

The call comes as fighting in Gaza escalates. A ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in place since January was disrupted on March 18 when the Israeli military launched a surprise airstrike that killed some 800 people and injured more than 1,600.

The ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza has killed more than 50,100 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured more than 113,700.

The escalating violence has prompted the intervention of international legal bodies. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, charging them with crimes against humanity and war crimes. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is considering a genocide case against Israel for its actions in Gaza.

As diplomatic efforts gather momentum, the UAE continues to press for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian assistance, and long-term peace efforts to stabilize the region.
