Pakistan Extends Hajj Application Deadline and Introduces Reforms for 2024 Pilgrimage
In a recent development, the Pakistani government has extended the deadline for submitting Hajj applications by an additional 10 days until December 22, offering potential pilgrims more time to apply for the sacred journey. This extension comes after the initial deadline expired on Tuesday, creating an opportunity for more individuals to participate in the pilgrimage.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony in Pakistan has implemented significant reforms, including the removal of a five-year ban on Haj-e-Badal, allowing individuals to perform Hajj on behalf of someone else. This decision aims to facilitate a broader range of participants and enhance inclusivity in the pilgrimage process.
To attract more foreign exchange, the government has introduced a new initiative, declaring that those paying their dues in dollars from abroad will be considered as “winners” without the need for a ballot. This move is strategic, considering the economic challenges faced by the country, and it is anticipated to boost participation from the Pakistani diaspora.
The ministry is adopting a “first come first served” approach for processing Haj applications in the sponsorship scheme, emphasizing efficiency and fairness in the selection process. Additionally, individuals who have performed Hajj in the last five years are now eligible to apply for Hajj 2024, broadening the pool of potential pilgrims.
In an effort to make the pilgrimage more accessible, the government has reduced Haj expenses by Rs 100,000 PKR, with the total cost for the next year’s pilgrimage set at Rs 1,075,000 PKR. This reduction is expected to benefit approximately 89,605 Pakistanis participating in the government-sponsored Haj scheme.
For the first time in history, women will have the opportunity to undertake the sacred journey without the traditional requirement of a male companion, marking a significant step toward gender inclusivity in the pilgrimage experience.
In addition to these reforms, the government is providing free-of-cost mobile SIMs with roaming internet packages to Pakistani pilgrims, aiming to enhance connectivity and communication during the pilgrimage.
The announcement reflects a commitment to streamline the Hajj application process, increase transparency, and make the pilgrimage more accessible to a diverse range of participants.
