Oman’s Fisheries Development Thrives with Al Khuwaymah Shrimp Farming Project

In the Sultanate of Oman, fish farming has emerged as a cornerstone in the nation’s strategy for economic diversification. Recent studies and research indicate that Oman is poised to become a frontrunner in the field of fish farming, with Fisheries Development Oman (FDO) playing a pivotal role in advancing this sector. A notable testament to Oman’s commitment to aquaculture is the management of the shrimp farming project in the Al Khuwaymah area within the Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali by FDO.

The inauguration of the Al Khuwaymah shrimp farm project is scheduled for Thursday, December 7, 2023. This development project is hailed as a significant contributor to enhancing food security in Oman. According to Eng. Belarab Omar Al Battashi, the Project Engineer of Al Khuwaymah shrimp farm, the project covers an expansive area of two million square meters, involving a substantial investment of OMR16 million.

Al Battashi highlighted that the anticipated annual output for the project in 2024 is set to reach 3,700 tonnes of whiteleg shrimp, with the potential for further growth to 4,000 tons. The pilot phase conducted in March 2023 demonstrated promising results, producing 500 tonnes of shrimp.

The Al Khuwaymah shrimp farm project underscores Oman’s commitment to sustainable economic development and food security, showcasing the nation’s strides in harnessing aquaculture to meet the growing demand for seafood. This initiative aligns with Oman’s broader strategy of economic diversification, creating new opportunities and contributing to the nation’s resilience and self-sufficiency.
