Man shocked with 8 fines for ‘slow driving’ on Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway

Emirates motorists emphasize the importance of adhering to speed regulations for safe and efficient travel

Man Shocked After Receiving 8 Fines for ‘Slow Driving’ on Abu Dhabi-Dubai Highway

A Reddit user, known as snazzy_champ, recently shared his confusion and frustration after being fined a total of eight times for “slow driving” on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway. The fines were incurred during a morning drive to Abu Dhabi and the return journey back to Dubai later that evening. The user claimed he was unaware of the minimum speed rule on the fast lanes, which led to the penalties.

The individual explained, “I traveled to Abu Dhabi from Dubai yesterday, maintaining a speed of 110-115 km/h in the second lane (next to the fast lane). When I reached home at night, I received a notification about eight fines—four for my morning drive and four for my return trip. I had no idea about the rule or the fine for driving slightly slow, and I didn’t see any signs indicating it.”

Unawareness and Delayed Notification

The driver expressed his displeasure, describing the penalty as “unfair.” He contended that he would have changed his speed on the way back if he had been informed of the penalty after his morning drive. He said, “It is totally unjust to impose fines without providing notifications or adequate awareness through signs or news articles,” even if he admitted his mistake.

The individual further emphasized his opinion that prompt updates could prevent such occurrences by sharing a screenshot of the notice outlining the fines.

Public Reactions: No Sympathy for the Driver

Other Reddit users who didn’t feel sorry for the driver expressed their disapproval of the post.

“Mate, there are obvious signs everywhere as soon as you enter the Abu Dhabi expressway,” one user wrote.

The lanes are even marked in bright red. You just weren’t paying attention.”

Another added, “The rule is displayed every 3 kilometers. Ignorance isn’t an excuse for road safety violations.”

A third user explained the rationale behind the rule: “The minimum speed in the fast lanes is 120 km/h. These rules were announced through the news and official social media channels. Driving below the speed limit in these lanes is a hazard to others. If you want to drive slower, there are dedicated lanes for that.”

Clarification from Authorities

In both directions on the highway, the first and second lanes from the left (fast lanes) are the only ones subject to the minimum speed requirement of 120 km/h. In addition to improving traffic flow, this regulation attempts to lower the likelihood of accidents brought on by slow-moving cars using lanes intended for quicker traffic.

Many others believed that the driver was clearly negligent, even if he called the incident “unfair.” Since the UAE places a high premium on road safety, following the law is crucial to upholding law and order and guaranteeing the security of all users of the road.
