Hit and Run: Police Arrested Driver within 3 Hours

An Asian national has been hit by a car while trying to cross the road from a non-pedestrian zone in the United Arab Emirates. Sharjah police arrested the Arab driver who fled without stopping the vehicle after the accident.

The victim of the accident is said to be an Asian national and is currently undergoing treatment at Al-Qasimi Hospital. And according to the information provided by the authorities, the information about the accident that happened on the Second Industrial Street in Sharjah was first reported to the Central Operations Room.

After receiving the information, the traffic police rushed to the spot and conducted an investigation and took necessary action. Police investigation revealed that the Asian man was attempting to cross the road from an unmarked pedestrian crossing area. As a result, the vehicle collided with the pedestrian.

After this, the authorities started trying to find the culprit through traffic monitoring systems and surveillance cameras. Police officials identified the culprit within three hours of the accident and arrested him.

Some of the main causes of hit and run accidents are:

  • Pedestrians crossing the road from an unauthorized place
  • Drivers who do not give way to pedestrians
In the UAE, harming a pedestrian and fleeing the scene of an accident is a punishable offence. Therefore, Sharjah Police has urged pedestrians to be cautious while crossing the road and to cross the road only from designated places.

Meanwhile, the police also warned drivers to give priority to pedestrians on the road and slow down. Apart from that, as fleeing from the scene of an accident is a punishable offense under the law, the residents have been asked to come forward to report the incident with social responsibility.

Earlier this month, the Traffic and Patrol Administration launched an awareness campaign called “Road Right for Drivers and Pedestrians”. It is also significant that the campaign aims to promote traffic culture among road users, pedestrians and drivers, and to recognize traffic rights that ensure their safety.
