Follow these 9 tips, stay hydrated all the time
With the scorching summer heat in the UAE, it is important for people to stay hydrated to avoid the risks of heat illness. Constant heat and high humidity can quickly cause dehydration. Also, it is harmful to health.
Hydration is not only about drinking water, but also about maintaining the balance of electrolytes and fluids in the body. So here are 9 tips to keep you hydrated during the scorching heat:
Start every day with water: After a long sleep, it is better to start your morning by drinking a glass of water. If you don’t want to drink plain water, you can soak slices of cucumber, mint or berries in the water and taste it.
Always Carry Water Bottle: Always carry a re-usable water bottle with you. So you can easily hydrate yourself throughout the day. Keeping a water bottle within reach will always remind you to stay hydrated.
Turn on a hydration reminder: We tend to forget to drink enough water on a busy day. So, you can set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget to drink water from time to time.
Drink electrolyte-rich drinks: Apart from water, opt for electrolyte-rich drinks like water or natural juices to maintain balance in the body. These help replenish the essential minerals you lose through sweat and keep the body hydrated.
Limit caffeinated and sugary drinks: Frequent consumption of caffeinated and sugary drinks like coffee, tea and sodas can dehydrate the body. Even if you take a small amount of these, make sure to balance them with adequate water intake.
Monitor Urine Color: An easy way to gauge how hydrated you are keeping your body is to monitor the color of your urine. If your urine is pale yellow, you can be sure that you are properly hydrated, while if it is dark yellow or amber, you are dehydrated.
Drink water before and after exercise: During periods of intense heat, exercise and physical activity can lead to rapid dehydration. So try to drink water before, during and after exercise.
Hydration with water-rich food: In general, doctors recommend adding water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, orange and spinach to your diet during summers. They also provide you with essential vitamins and minerals.
Avoid direct exposure scorching sun during peak hours: Limit direct exposure to sunlight between 11am and 3:30pm during hot summers. Also, plan outdoor activities during cooler times of the day such as early morning, evening and night.
