Blinken Calls on UAE to Support Peace, Civilian Rule in Sudan

In a recent call with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken underscored the pressing need to end ongoing hostilities in Sudan and support initiatives to establish a civilian-led government. The call, which took place on Friday, emphasized the critical goal of bringing stability to Sudan amid a turbulent conflict that has disrupted the nation’s path toward peace and democratic governance.

The U.S. State Department noted that Blinken emphasized the urgent need for violence to stop in Sudan and reaffirmed the need of international support for Sudanese attempts to move toward civilian governance.

The United States views the formation of a civilian-led government as essential for long-term peace, stability, and development in Sudan, a country grappling with intense fighting and political uncertainty.

Blinken brought up the pressing humanitarian situation in Sudan during the discussion, emphasizing the necessity of increased humanitarian access to reach impacted areas and communities. The provision of essential medical treatment, relief supplies, and other services by local and international organizations would be facilitated by greater access.

Blinken also acknowledged the UAE’s support of humanitarian initiatives outside of Sudan. He acknowledged the UAE’s participation in delivering much-needed relief in Gaza and Lebanon, where conflict and economic difficulties have resulted in substantial humanitarian needs, and thanked Sheikh Abdullah and the UAE government for their assistance to the people of these countries.
