NEW DELHI: In yet another exhilarating IPL showdown, Abhishek Sharma’s commanding performance propelled Sunrisers Hyderabad to a thrilling four-wicket victory over Punjab Kings on Sunday.

Electing to bat on a pitch conducive to batting, Punjab Kings set a formidable target of 214/5, led by Prabhsimran Singh’s explosive 71 off 45 balls and skipper Jitesh Sharma’s late onslaught in the final over.

Despite the setback of losing Travis Head off the very first ball, Sunrisers Hyderabad exhibited remarkable composure and determination throughout their daunting chase. With meticulous planning and execution, they successfully chased down the target with five balls to spare, securing a crucial win that elevated them to the second position in the IPL table.

With 17 points from 14 matches, Sunrisers Hyderabad anxiously awaited the outcome of the clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. A victory for Rajasthan, currently with 16 points, would potentially see them surpass Sunrisers Hyderabad for the coveted No. 2 spot, granting them an additional chance to secure a berth in the final.

Abhishek Sharma emerged as the star performer for Sunrisers Hyderabad, displaying exceptional batting prowess as he swiftly notched up his third half-century of the season in just 21 balls. His explosive knock of 66 runs from 28 deliveries, embellished with six sixes and five boundaries, significantly tilted the balance in favor of his team, setting the stage for a thrilling chase.

Contributions from Henrich Klaasen (42 off 26 balls), Rahul Tripathi (33 off 18 balls), and Nitish Reddy (37 off 25 balls) further bolstered Sunrisers Hyderabad’s dominance in the run chase, ensuring a comprehensive victory.

Despite Abhishek’s dismissal by Shashank Singh, Sunrisers Hyderabad remained firmly in control at the halfway mark of the innings, with the remaining chase becoming a mere formality.

With only seven runs required from the final 10 balls, Sanvir Singh sealed the victory with a boundary in the first ball of the last over, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp.

Earlier in the match, Arshdeep struck early for Sunrisers Hyderabad, dismissing Travis Head for a golden duck. However, Punjab Kings quickly regained momentum with Rahul Tripathi’s aggressive innings, setting the tone for a challenging total.

Abhishek Sharma then took charge, launching a blistering attack on the Punjab Kings bowlers, particularly targeting Arshdeep, as Sunrisers Hyderabad raced to 50 runs in just four overs.

Despite Harshal Patel’s efforts, who conceded 22 runs in his first over but later claimed a wicket, Sunrisers Hyderabad maintained their dominance, reaching 72/2 after five overs.

In response, Punjab Kings got off to a solid start with the opening partnership between Prabhsimran Singh and Atharva Taide, accumulating 97 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket.

Prabhsimran’s aggressive knock of 71 runs off 45 balls, supported by Taide’s 46 off 27 balls, propelled Punjab Kings to a strong position. However, a middle-order collapse, triggered by T Natarajan’s two crucial wickets, limited Punjab Kings to 214/5.

Despite Jitesh Sharma’s late heroics in the final over, Punjab Kings fell short as Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a well-deserved victory, marking yet another memorable chapter in the ongoing IPL saga.
