Celestial Spectacle: Geminids Meteor Shower Illuminates UAE Night Sky with Over 100 Shooting Stars
Late Thursday night, the UAE’s skies were transformed into a celestial canvas as the Geminids meteor shower reached its peak, treating stargazers to a breathtaking display of more than 100 shooting stars. The meteor shower, renowned for its reliability and brilliance, illuminated the night sky for over three hours, creating a captivating spectacle visible across the country.
Enthusiasts gathered at various prime stargazing locations, such as the rocky desert of Sharjah’s Mleiha, away from the city lights, where the darkness allowed celestial objects to shine at their brightest. Against the backdrop of the Al Faya limestone hill range and the Fossil Rock mountain, families and visitors laid out cushions on the desert sand, eagerly awaiting the celestial show.
The Geminids meteor shower, known for its consistency, typically produces up to 120 bright and colorful shooting stars per hour at its peak. Stargazers were treated to a dazzling display, surpassing expectations, as they observed a remarkable count of 103 shooting stars in a span of three hours. The absence of the Moon’s glow further enhanced the visibility of the meteors, creating a mesmerizing experience.

Simultaneously, the Dubai Astronomy Group hosted an event at Al Qudra Lake, attracting a crowd of 500 people eager to partake in the celestial phenomenon. Additionally, numerous residents ventured into the desert independently to catch glimpses of the meteor shower.

Children and adults alike were captivated by the sight of real shooting stars, with some individuals counting as many as 103 meteors.
