Saudi Arabia’s Mukaab: A $500 Billion Vision for a Modern City in Riyadh

Riyadh. Oct. 27-
Middle Eastern country Saudi Arabia relies heavily on its crude oil production for its economy. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has created a plan called ‘Saudi Plan 2030’.

Accordingly, it is planned to increase the domestic production to 4 lakh crore rupees by 2030 through non-crude oil sectors and create 3.4 lakh jobs out of it.

In that way, they are going to set up a modern city inside a huge building in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

This building is named Mukaab.

It is 1,300 feet tall, 1,200 feet wide and has a built-up area of 2 crore square feet, making it the world’s largest square building. Inside it are thousands of houses, hotel rooms, modern retail outlets, offices, function halls and leisure facilities.

Also, similar to the American Las Vegas spherical building, in this ‘Mukaab’ building, digital screens will be installed on the outer walls and advertisements will be published.

However, the project has caused controversy in Saudi Arabia. Some have objected that it resembles the Kaaba in Mecca, the Muslim holiest site.

Also, the project has become controversial as it will lead to displacement of local people.
