US imposes sanctions China, UAE entities over Iran ties

Washington targets entities aiding Iran’s drone program, escalating pressure amid nuclear and military concerns

US Sanctions China, UAE, and Iran Entities Over Weapons Procurement Network

The United States has imposed new sanctions on entities and individuals in Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and China, accusing them of being part of an Iranian weapons procurement network.
This move is part of Washington’s continued efforts to reduce Iran’s military capabilities, particularly its drone program, as tensions rise.

The US Treasury Department imposed penalties on six businesses and two individuals for allegedly acquiring components for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on behalf of a leading Iranian drone manufacturer.
.The action was coordinated with the Department of Justice as part of the broader strategy to limit Iran’s weapons proliferation.

Iran’s Drone Program and Regional Threats

According to US officials, Iran has been supplying UAVs and missiles to terrorist groups in the region and to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that Iran’s growing military exports pose a threat to civilians, US personnel, and allied nations.

“Treasury will continue to disrupt Iran’s military-industrial complex and its proliferation of UAVs, missiles, and conventional weapons that empower destabilizing actors, including terrorist proxies,” Bessent stated.

The latest sanctions targeted an Iranian company and two Iranian individuals, a Chinese company, and four UAE-based companies. The companies are suspected of helping Iran access key components for its drone program, which violates existing US sanctions.

Part of a Larger Pressure Campaign on Iran

Tuesday’s sanctions are part of an intensified US crackdown on Iranian weapons proliferators.
This marks the second round of sanctions since former President Donald Trump reinstated his “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran, which includes economic measures aimed at crippling Tehran’s ability to develop advanced weaponry.

Trump’s February directive to Treasury Secretary Bessent emphasized the importance of strict enforcement procedures to target anyone who defy US sanctions. The former president has also threatened Iran with dire consequences, including military force and secondary sanctions, if it does not cooperate with US demands regarding its nuclear program.

Iran’s Nuclear Programme and International Concerns

Since the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal during Trump’s first term, Iran has considerably raised its uranium enrichment levels, exceeding the agreement’s limits.

Western governments suspect Tehran of developing nuclear weapons under the pretext of a civilian energy program, which Iran rejects.
The Iranian government insists its nuclear activities are solely for peaceful purposes.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations has yet to respond to the latest US sanctions, but the move signals Washington’s continued push to isolate Iran economically and militarily while maintaining pressure on its allies and trade partners, including China and the UAE.
