Uber CEO Highlights Autonomous Vehicle Progress in UAE at Global Summit

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi shared insights about the company’s developments in self-driving technology at the Semafor World Economy Summit 2025 in Washington, with an emphasis on projects in the United Arab Emirates.

Uber’s partnership with WeRide, a Chinese autonomous driving startup that successfully introduced driverless car services in Abu Dhabi last year, was commended by Khosrowshahi. Initially encompassing Saadiyat Island and Yas Island, the rollout is set to expand throughout the emirate in the future.

Building on this success, Uber’s regional operations reached a new milestone earlier this year when the relationship expanded to Dubai and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) introduced autonomous taxis.

During his remarks, Khosrowshahi addressed broader industry challenges, including stiff global competition from Chinese carmakers in the electric and self-driving sectors. He emphasized that while ride-sharing services reduce reliance on private vehicle ownership, he personally owns a Tesla and occasionally uses its self-driving capabilities.
