UAE’s New Traffic Law: Stricter Penalties and License Rules Effective from Saturday
Dubai: The new traffic law in the UAE will come into effect from Saturday. The new law recommends strict penalties for violators. According to this, three categories of people will not need a driving license in the UAE. Those who hold a valid license from a foreign country, those who have an international license, and those who have arrived on a visitor visa and hold any of the above two licenses will not need a UAE driving license. In addition, the minimum age for obtaining a license has been raised to 17 years.
According to the new law, driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol will be punishable by imprisonment and a fine. Practicing with a vehicle on the road in a way that endangers the lives of others is also a serious crime. Those caught in traffic cases can be arrested by the authorities if they do not provide their name and address or provide false information. They can be arrested if they try to escape after causing an accident or try to evade a police check.
Driving a damaged vehicle will result in your vehicle being impounded. Driving without a valid license will result in a fine. Repeat violations will result in the car being impounded.
Additionally, unauthorized changes to the physical structure of the vehicle can lead to impoundment.
Authorities can also seize a vehicle even if it is involved in any crime.
Driving a vehicle with a license that is not approved by the UAE will result in a fine of Dh2,000 to Dh10,000 in the first instance. Recurring violators face a fine of Dh5,000 to Dh50,000 and a maximum jail sentence of three months. The new law states that you are not allowed to cross the street in unapproved areas. Additionally, the legislation prohibits crossing roadways where the posted speed limit is 80 km/h.
