PhonePe Boosts UAE Payments with Neopay Terminals and UPI

PhonePe and Mashreq Bank Revolutionize UAE Transactions for Indian Travelers
PhonePe, a prominent digital payments platform, has recently forged a strategic partnership aimed at transforming the landscape of financial transactions for Indian travelers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This collaboration represents a significant milestone, empowering PhonePe users embarking on journeys to the UAE to effortlessly conduct transactions through the PhonePe app at Neopay terminals operated by Mashreq Bank, a leading financial institution in the region. The scope of this collaboration extends across diverse sectors, encompassing retail stores, dining establishments, as well as popular tourist and leisure destinations, thereby ensuring unparalleled convenience and accessibility for users during their travels.
One of the key highlights of this collaboration is the emphasis on transparency throughout the transaction process. When users make payments, they are presented with the current exchange rate, and the amount is debited directly from their accounts in Indian rupees. This transparency not only enhances the user experience but also fosters trust and confidence in the payment process, reflecting PhonePe’s commitment to providing a seamless and reliable payment experience for its users.
Crucially, this partnership isn’t confined to Indian travelers alone. Non-resident Indians (NRIs) residing in the UAE can also reap the benefits of this collaboration by leveraging the PhonePe app and utilizing their designated non-resident accounts with Indian banks to make seamless payments. This inclusive approach underscores PhonePe’s dedication to meeting the diverse needs of its user base, transcending geographical boundaries to provide convenient payment solutions for all.
Ritesh Pai, CEO of International Payments at PhonePe, has underscored the strategic significance of this collaboration, particularly in light of the UAE’s status as a premier destination for millions of Indian visitors annually. By facilitating seamless transactions, this partnership aims to enhance the overall travel experience for visitors, contributing to smoother and more enjoyable journeys.

Behind the scenes, the collaboration between PhonePe and Mashreq Bank is facilitated through Mashreq’s partnership with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), a subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This collaboration aligns with the Indian government’s vision to extend the reach of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) technology beyond India’s borders. Mashreq Bank has proactively ensured that its Neopay terminals are equipped to accept UPI payments, reflecting its commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions.
Anubhav Sharma, Deputy Chief of Partnership Business Development and Marketing at NIPL, has highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration in their broader efforts to develop cross-border payment solutions for consumers. By unifying the ecosystem and streamlining payment processes, this partnership aims to simplify transactions for Indian travelers to the UAE, thereby contributing to a more seamless and hassle-free experience.
Looking ahead, PhonePe has ambitious plans to further enhance its offerings in the UAE market. In addition to facilitating travel and local transactions, the company intends to introduce inward remittance services once the corridor for inward remittances is established. Leveraging the robust UPI infrastructure, this service will revolutionize the money transfer process by eliminating the need for cumbersome details such as bank account numbers and IFSC codes, thereby offering users unparalleled convenience and efficiency. This forward-looking approach underscores PhonePe’s commitment to innovation and its mission to simplify financial transactions for users across the globe.
