SEWA Launches Largest 220kV Substation to Enhance Sharjah’s Power Network


Sharjah, UAE – The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) has opened its most modern 220kV substation, which is ideally situated near the Umm Fannin airport. This facility, which is intended to enhance power distribution and meet future energy demands, is a significant addition to Sharjah’s energy network.

A Multi-Million Investment in Energy Development
The initiative, which cost over AED 500 million, demonstrates SEWA’s commitment to improving the electricity infrastructure. The substation, developed in partnership with General Projects Company for Mechanical and Electrical Contracting and Siemens Energy, incorporates cutting-edge technologies to improve the efficiency of power transmission.

Improving capacity and grid resilience
The recently commissioned substation has significantly increased Sharjah’s electricity capacity. Key features include:

Four transformers with a capacity of 400 MVA (220/132 kV)
Four 132/33 kV, 75 MVA transformers
A combined capacity of over 1,200 MW
The initiative seeks to ensure that users in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors always have access to electricity by strengthening the reliability of the electricity grid. SEWA is lowering the danger of power outages while meeting Sharjah’s expanding energy demands by increasing network flexibility.

Hamad Al-Tunaiji, Director of Energy Transmission at SEWA, highlighted that the project aligns with the authority’s long-term strategy to modernize power transmission and distribution.The substation, which was constructed in accordance with international standards, supports environmentally friendly energy solutions while increasing efficiency.
