UAE Schools Modify Diwali Celebrations in Solidarity with Gaza Crisis
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is home to a diverse population, including a significant number of Indian expatriates. As Diwali, a major Indian festival, approaches, some schools in the UAE have decided to grant extended weekends to students to celebrate the occasion. For instance, Gems Our Own Indian School announced a four-day weekend, closing on Friday, November 10, and Monday, November 13, for Diwali celebrations.
However, due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, on-campus festivities are being kept low-key, and schools are taking the opportunity to educate students about the regional situation. Activities will be limited, and students are encouraged to mark Diwali by contributing to the Emirates Red Crescent campaign, which is providing relief for those affected by the conflict in Gaza.
Several schools are foregoing major celebrations this year out of respect for the crisis in Gaza. Abhilasha Singh, Principal of Shining Star International, expressed the sentiment that considering the dire situation in Gaza, it doesn’t feel appropriate to engage in extravagant festivities. Students are being reminded of the privilege of living in a peaceful state and are encouraged to reflect on the suffering of those in Palestine.
Sharjah Indian School, while giving the day off for Diwali, has also decided to forgo traditional festivities and sweets distribution. The school’s students’ council has shown great understanding and empathy towards the situation.
Many schools across the UAE have set up collection boxes for parents and students to donate essential items like food, blankets, tents, hygiene products, and more to help those affected by the conflict in Gaza.
In light of the ongoing crisis, Gems Education, a prominent education provider, has communicated to its schools that celebratory events will be suspended until further notice, considering it inappropriate given the current situation.
Students have shown understanding and support for these decisions, recognizing the importance of solidarity and humanitarian efforts during times of crisis. They are actively participating in initiatives to help those in need.
