The Dubai Crocodile Park has allowed free entry for children aged up to 11 years during July and August when schools are closed for the summer break.

“Dubai Crocodile Park is passionate about inspiring the young minds of Dubai and is offering free admission to children during the July and August holidays,” it said in a statement on Monday.

Tickets to Dubai Crocodile Park cost Dh95 for adults and Dh75 for children during the year. However, children aged up to 3 years have free admission during the year.

Crocodiles, among the oldest creatures on Earth, play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance within their natural habitats. These reptiles are considered living fossils, having existed for millions of years and adapting to various environmental changes over time. Currently, these creatures face numerous threats to their survival, including poaching, habitat loss, and climate change. Poaching for their skin and meat has led to significant declines in some crocodile populations. Habitat loss due to human encroachment and environmental changes disrupts their living and breeding areas, while climate change affects the temperature-dependent sex determination of crocodile eggs, potentially skewing population dynamics. Studies indicate that some species of crocodiles may face the risk of extinction if serious conservation measures are not implemented. Efforts to protect and conserve crocodile populations are crucial for preserving the biodiversity and ecological balance of their habitats.

Dubai Crocodile Park announced the commencement of the annual nesting season in May, a remarkable time when female Nile Crocodiles lay their eggs in specially designated nesting areas within the park. The nesting season is a critical period for the survival and continuation of crocodile species. Female crocodiles carefully select and prepare nesting sites to ensure the best conditions for their eggs. They lay their eggs in nests built with vegetation and soil, providing a warm and secure environment for incubation.

Experts at the Dubai Crocodile Park collect the eggs shortly after laying. Each nest is meticulously examined to record parameters such as temperature, size, and shell quality. This process not only aids in conservation efforts but also provides invaluable insights into the health of the crocodile population. By monitoring these parameters, experts can ensure that the eggs develop under optimal conditions, increasing the chances of successful hatching. This data also helps researchers understand the reproductive health and environmental needs of crocodiles, contributing to broader conservation strategies.

Once hatched, the mother crocodile tenderly carries her offspring in her mouth to the water, significantly increasing their chances of survival. This maternal behavior is essential for protecting the vulnerable hatchlings from predators and environmental hazards. Despite meticulous care, the journey from hatchling to adulthood is fraught with challenges, with only 1 percent of wild hatchlings typically reaching maturity due to various predators. Predators such as birds, mammals, and even other reptiles pose significant threats to young crocodiles. The high mortality rate highlights the importance of protective measures and safe habitats for the early stages of crocodile life.

Recently, the Park also organised an event for a group of content creators to raise awareness about the importance of crocodiles and the necessity of their protection, coinciding with the celebration of World Crocodile Day. This event aimed to educate the public about the critical role crocodiles play in their ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation efforts. By engaging content creators, the park leveraged social media and digital platforms to reach a broader audience, spreading awareness and fostering a sense of responsibility towards crocodile conservation. World Crocodile Day serves as a reminder of the global effort required to protect these ancient creatures and ensure their survival for future generations.
