UAE Cyber Security Council Unveils Alarming Statistics on Cyber Threats

The UAE Cyber Security Council has revealed concerning statistics regarding cyber threats plaguing both individuals and businesses in the region. According to their findings for the third quarter of 2023, a staggering 54 percent of individuals fell victim to phishing websites, while nearly one-fifth, or 19 percent, were targeted by social media scams during this period.

The threat landscape extended to the corporate sector as well, with 56 percent of businesses and companies experiencing data breaches during the same quarter. These breaches highlight the pressing need for robust cybersecurity measures across all sectors of the economy.

In a recent social media post, the council shed light on the prevalent methods used in social engineering attacks, which primarily include phishing websites, deceptive emails, social media scams, and instant messaging hoaxes. Social engineering attacks have become increasingly sophisticated, posing significant challenges to cybersecurity professionals and individuals alike.

The statistics further reveal that social media scams accounted for 19 percent of the cyber attacks targeting individuals, while a notable 37 percent of corporate entities fell victim to similar scams. This underscores the importance of awareness and vigilance in recognizing and thwarting such fraudulent activities.

Mail phishing attempts also posed a significant threat, targeting 27 percent of individuals, while 16 percent were duped by instant messaging hoaxes. These tactics exploit human psychology and trust to deceive unsuspecting victims, highlighting the need for ongoing education and training in cybersecurity best practices.

In response to the growing threat landscape, the UAE Cyber Security Council issued a warning to the public regarding the prevalence of social engineering attacks.
