UAE Man Gives ‘Triple Talaq’ to Wife in Kerala via WhatsApp
Husband Ends Marriage After Receiving Money, Family Seeks Legal Action

UAE-Based Man Gives Triple Talaq to Wife in Kerala via WhatsApp
Kasaragod, Kerala: A 21-year-old woman from Kasaragod was left heartbroken after her husband Abdul Razak sent a WhatsApp message to her father with the words “talaq, talaq, talaq”, ending their marriage. The shocking incident took place on February 21, just days before she was scheduled to travel to the UAE to be with him.
Marriage and Financial Demands
Razzaq, also a native of Kasargod, married the woman in August 2022 when she was just 18. Following their marriage, he took her to the UAE once but frequently demanded money from her and her family. According to the woman, these financial pressures had been ongoing for some time, and she was left stunned by his sudden decision to divorce her via WhatsApp.
Allegations of Financial Exploitation
Razzaq had demanded payment, according to the woman’s father, saying it was required to help his wife relocate to the United Arab Emirates. The woman’s family transferred the necessary funds and sold her gold ornaments to satisfy his demands. Instead of transporting her to the United Arab Emirates, Razzaq sent the triple talaq message soon after he received the money. According to the woman’s father, he has proof that the money was transferred.
Consequences for Religion and Law
“Triple talaq” is a controversial Islamic custom that allows a Muslim man to divorce his wife right away by speaking “talaq” three times.
However, this practice was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of India in 2017, and in 2019, the Parliament passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, making it a criminal offense. As per Islamic traditions, talaq should involve discussions with elders and religious leaders, a process that Razzaq completely ignored, the woman’s father pointed out.
Legal Actions Taken Because they are extremely outraged and eager to obtain justice, the woman and her family have gone to the local police and filed a case against Razzaq for deceiving and exploiting her financially. Because of the abrupt divorce and the clear proof of financial transfers, the woman’s family is determined to sue him. This case highlights two enduring problems: the misuse of triple talaq and the exploitation of women in marriage. It is expected that authorities will take severe legal action against Razzaq to guarantee justice for the young woman.
