UAE Launches Emirates Polar Programme to Advance Leadership in Polar Research
Abu Dhabi [UAE], November 6: During the plenary session of the UAE Government Annual Meetings 2024, the UAE announced the launch of a Polar Research Program as part of plans to elevate the country’s position among leaders in polar research and presence.
Maryam Almeiri, head of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and head of the “UAE Polar Mission Steering Committee”, outlined the details of the project developed last year through the cooperation of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and the Ministry. Department of State, Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, National Meteorological Center and Khalifa University.
The program combines input from scientists, experts and diplomats to define key research priorities that include scientific, technological and business applications. Initial steps include establishing a “Polar Research Center” at Khalifa University, forming strategic international partnerships, signing relevant agreements and joining international polar missions.
Almhairi said these activities demonstrate the UAE’s appreciation of the strategic importance and worldwide influence of polar science. He underlined that he wants to prepare Emirati experts to take part in international polar missions, acknowledging the polar regions’ enormous potential despite their inherent difficulties.
Almheiri announced, “The two Emiratis begin their Antarctic expedition tomorrow, November 7, and another mission to the Arctic is planned for the summer of 2025, expanding the UAE’s scientific presence to both poles.”
He explained the UAE’s drive to join the forefront of polar research, emphasizing the country’s commitment to soft power, inspiring future generations in scientific pursuits, building national scientific capacity and championing global climate action and key environmental causes.
The Honorable Cabinet affirmed its approval to sign all pertinent international agreements required for polar existence and research. Almhairi described Khalifa University’s future polar research initiatives and stated that the UAE has been asked to take part in the 33rd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition and the Antarctica Insync Project.
