UAE Enacts Stricter Traffic Law with Jail Terms and Fines Up to Dh200,000

ABU DHABI: A new traffic law in the United Arab Emirates on Friday has introduced tougher penalties for a number of traffic offenses, including jail terms and heavy fines for dangerous offences, including wrongful crossing of roads, hit-and-run and drunken driving.

According to the Ordinance-Law, a cabinet resolution determines fines and administrative penalties, the agency that imposes those fines and receives related grievances, and the agency that collects said fines and penalties.

Jaywalking

Crossing the road from places other than those designated for the purpose shall be punishable with imprisonment and a fine of not less than 5,000 and not more than 10,000 dirhams or with either of these two fines if it causes a traffic accident. .

Driving under the influence of alcohol
Imprisonment and fine not less than Dh20,000 or imprisonment and fine not less than Dh20,000 and not more than Dh100,000 for misusing license plates or driving or attempting to drive under the influence of alcohol, imprisonment and fine not less than Dh30,000 and Dh200,000 Overdosing, or under the influence of drugs Driving or attempting to drive or psychotropic substances.

Those who drive with a suspended driving license shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding (3) months and a fine not less than Dhs 10,000 or with one of these two penalties.

Hit and run
Fleeing from the scene of an accident and failing to give relevant information shall be punishable with (1) imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year and a fine not less than Dh50,000 and not exceeding Dh100,000, or with either of these. Two sentences.

Any person who, by negligence, causes the death of another person by using a vehicle shall be liable to imprisonment and to a fine or fine not less than 50,000.

If the incident occurs under certain aggravating circumstances, such as driving in a valley during floods, the punishment is at least one year in prison and a fine or fine of not less than 100,000.
