UAE Introduces 10-Year Passport Validity for Citizens Aged 21 and Above

Emirati Citizens Now Benefit from Extended Passport Validity Starting July 8, 2024, Reducing Renewal Frequency

UAE Passport Authority Announces 10-Year Validity for Passports for Citizens Aged 21 and Above

The UAE Passport Authority has officially announced a significant extension in the validity period of Emirati passports, now set to last 10 years. This new policy, unveiled by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP), will come into effect starting Monday, July 8, 2024. The change means that UAE citizens aged 21 and above will now benefit from a decade-long validity for their passports, a notable increase from the previous five-year term.

Traditionally, Emirati passports were valid for five years from the date of issuance. The introduction of the 10-year passport is designed to ease the renewal process for citizens, reducing the frequency of required renewals. With this new policy, individuals will only need to renew their passports once every ten years, effectively cutting the customer journey from two trips to just one. This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to streamline bureaucratic procedures and enhance convenience for its citizens.

Fatima Al Balooshi, a 26-year-old Emirati, expressed her appreciation for the new policy, noting how it reflects the leadership’s commitment to improving citizens’ lives. She recently renewed her passport at Dubai Airport, a process that took less than 30 minutes. Al Balooshi highlighted that the extended validity period will greatly simplify her and her family’s lives. “Due to our busy schedules, we sometimes forget to renew our passports before they expire. The new 10-year validity will provide us with more time between renewals, making the process much more manageable.”

Ahmed Khalifa, a 34-year-old resident of Dubai, echoed similar sentiments. He pointed out that the UAE has a longstanding tradition of implementing policies that enhance the convenience of daily life for its people. “This new policy is just one example of the government’s ongoing efforts to make life easier for its citizens,” Khalifa said. He believes that the 10-year validity will save UAE citizens time and effort, reinforcing the country’s reputation for progressive and citizen-friendly policies.

Major General Suhail Juma Al Khaili, Director General of Identity and Passports at the Authority, clarified that the 10-year passport validity will be applicable only to citizens aged 21 and above. For those under 21 years of age, the existing 5-year passport will remain in place. This differentiation ensures that the new policy targets the demographic most likely to benefit from the extended validity.

The process for obtaining the new 10-year Emirati passport will follow the same established procedures and delivery channels as the current passports. Citizens will be able to apply for the new 10-year passport when their existing passports expire or when all the pages in their current passport are used up, whichever occurs first.

To facilitate the renewal process, UAE citizens have multiple convenient options. Domestically, they can apply for their new passports through their local passport office, which is managed by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. For urgent renewal needs, dedicated passport offices are available at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah airports, operating around the clock to accommodate any immediate requirements.

For UAE citizens residing abroad, the new 10-year passport service will also be accessible through UAE embassies and consulates. This ensures that citizens living outside the country can also take advantage of the extended passport validity, regardless of their location.

This policy update underscores the UAE’s commitment to enhancing administrative efficiency and providing greater convenience for its citizens. By extending passport validity and streamlining the renewal process, the UAE continues to demonstrate its dedication to improving the quality of life for its people.
