UAE: DEWA switches to cubic metre for water measurement

Transition ensures UAE compliance, standardization, and efficiency

DEWA to Adopt Cubic Metre for Water Measurement from March 2025

Dubai [UAE], February 9:Starting with the March 2025 billing cycle, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will use the cubic metre as the common unit of measurement for water usage.

This choice complies with the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology’s Cabinet Resolution No. (85) of 2023 and Ministerial Resolution No. (43) of 2024, which call for the removal of the Imperial Gallon (IG) unit from water meters throughout the United Arab Emirates.

To guarantee that our services fulfil the highest standards of quality, efficiency, dependability, and availability, we are dedicated to abiding by national and international laws.

To improve consistency with international best practices, the imperial gallon should be replaced by a standard and widely accepted unit of measurement, the cubic meter.

“This change will help standardize across industries, provide top-notch services, and strengthen DEWA’s leadership in innovation and sustainability, which will ultimately benefit customers and stakeholders,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

The smart meters currently installed for customers are already compliant with the cubic meter measurement system, and therefore no changes are required to customers’ meters. To ensure a smooth and seamless transition, DEWA will include both units (cubic meters and gallons) in water bills and on the customer dashboard as part of the preparatory phase.

The final adoption of the new unit will come into effect with the March 2025 billing cycle. Customers will be informed of the change through official communication channels.

The current smart meters installed for customers are already compliant with the cubic meter measurement system, and DEWA will not change customers’ meters.

To facilitate a smooth transition, DEWA will begin using both units (gallons and cubic meters) on water bills and customer dashboards. This will be done ahead of the final adoption of the new unit starting with the March 2025 billing cycle. Official communication channels will be used to inform customers about the new change.
