UAE Court Sentences Three to Death for Rabbi Zvi Kogan’s Killing

Dubai, UAE: A UAE court has handed down death sentences to three individuals for the murder of Israeli-Moldovan rabbi Zvi Kogan, as reported by state media on Monday. A fourth person involved in aiding the crime received a life sentence.

The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals’ State Security Chamber issued the ruling following an extensive trial. While the identities of the accused were not disclosed, reports indicate that three Uzbek nationals were apprehended in Turkey and extradited to the UAE for prosecution.

According to the state-run WAM news agency, the defendants tracked and murdered Kogan. The prosecution presented compelling evidence, including detailed confessions, forensic reports, autopsy results, crime scene tools, and witness testimonies.

Although UAE authorities have not disclosed a motive, the murder occurred during heightened tensions due to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. While some Israeli officials hinted at potential Iranian involvement, the UAE has not made any official allegations. Iran’s embassy in Abu Dhabi has denied any connection to the killing.

Rabbi Kogan, 28, was a prominent member of Dubai’s growing Jewish community, running a kosher grocery store and serving as an emissary for the Chabad Lubavitch movement. He was laid to rest in Israel.

Capital punishment is rare in the UAE, but when imposed, executions are typically carried out swiftly after all legal appeals are exhausted. The country primarily employs firing squads for such cases.
