UAE Advocates for Gender Balance and Women’s Empowerment at BRICS
On behalf of the UAE, its Gender Balance Council, Cent. Petersburg, Russia, focused on “Women, Governance, Leadership.” The platform allowed BRICS countries to share experiences and best practices in women’s empowerment while discussing cooperation to address challenges and promote inclusive progress.
Led by Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Vice President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, the UAE delegation highlighted the country’s achievements in advancing women’s leadership and integrating gender balance into sustainable development strategies.
Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, reiterated the UAE’s commitment to promoting gender balance, which is central to the country’s vision and aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 5. . Al Marri thanked Russia for hosting the event and acknowledged South Africa’s leadership in launching the Women’s Affairs Platform. She outlined significant strides made in gender representation, including nine women ministers and 50% female representation in the Federal National Council.
Al Marri underlined the UAE Gender Balance Council’s role in driving reforms to increase women’s participation in governance, including legal mandates including on-site childcare, equal pay and women’s representation on boards. They announced new regulations requiring private companies to appoint at least one woman to their boards.
Stressing the importance of cooperation, Al Marri stated the UAE’s commitment to knowledge exchange within BRICS to reduce the gender gap in leadership and promote women’s empowerment in the economic sector.
Moussa Al Suwaidi, Secretary General of the UAE Gender Balance Council, highlighted the need for sustainable international cooperation to improve gender balance globally, ensuring that it is embedded in all sectors for a sustainable future.
